Recycle Bingo By Dream Weaver

It has been a while since my last post, mainly because I was swept up in the end of the year flurry that I affectionately dubbed the storm before the calm. From the start of spring sports to the end-of-year recitals, the well planned class parties to the impromptu back yard barbecues, these last weeks of school have been a flurry of celebrations that seem to reflect the end of a very long winter.

I have to share our experimental and shockingly successful PTO-sponsored family event: Recycle BINGO. With a limited social budget and local shop owners (who have generously donated prizes in the past) squeezed in a tight economy, I was challenged with hosting a game night for elementary school kids with no prizes. I did not want to waste PTO money on cheap trinkets that would fall apart in one day.

I read many stories about the increased market for second hand goods, so I floated the idea of using old toys from families as BINGO prizes. Some parents turned up their noses, but many more jumped forward and offered to donate their gently used books and games.

The result was amazing! We collected entire book series (Magic Tree House, Mary Kate & Ashley, Boxcar Children) in mint condition. Families brought board games still in plastic wrap, complicated puzzles with all the pieces, and current video games. The children’s eyes lit up as they entered the gym and saw the prize table. Parents were thrilled to empty their closets and share old toys with new friends.

If you’re looking for a low-cost, earth-friendly summer activity for your community, block party, homeowners association, or other social network, consider Recycle BINGO. Remember to check the quality of donations before you put them on the prize table. Most important, be prepared for parents to gush about your brilliant idea.
