Chimney Sweepers - Rob Riemer - 847-220-7830 - SCAM new # (630) 589-6217

This past weekend I learned a costly but important lesson.  Do your research, ask friends for recommendations, and check with the Better Business Bureau before hiring.  I know nothing about chimneys which is why I should have been more careful.  I was told by my home inspector that I needed a liner installed in the two chimneys in my new house in Chicago.  So, I looked on the internet and called The Chimney Sweeps, Robert Riemer who came out to my house to give me an estimate.  There were so many warning signs but I didn’t pay attention because I wanted to get the fireplaces taken care of as soon as possible.

The Chimney Sweeps, who service all of the Chicago area, drove up in a black unmarked truck, warning # 1 – no business name on vehicle.  Rob Riemer was very nice, outgoing, personable, friendly, etc.  He said that during the week he worked for Early Times Chimney Sweeps of Chicago who also do chimney cleaning and repair.  Rob and his partner then started talking about what needed to be done to the chimneys and how much it would cost.  Rob said that my home inspector was wrong and that I did not need a liner, what I needed was sealant placed on the inside of the chimneys.  He claimed he had just saved me $1,000.  The sealant cost $35 per foot.  So, Rob and his partner started figuring out how much it would cost… this is when it started to feel wrong.  They started throwing out numbers and sort of playing off each other.    At one point his partner walked away and I asked if he was going to write up the estimate.  Instead, he came back a few minutes later and said “we got our other two jobs do early today so we can do your job right now for $600 cash”, warning #2, #3, & #4.  #2 always get a written estimate.  #3 don’t jump into anything.  #4 don’t pay in cash when you have no idea what good complete work looks like.  My gut was screaming at me that it was wrong but I ignored it.  So, an hour or so later Rob said they were done.  I could see that the chimney caps were replaced, I saw them with their wet/dry vacs cleaning the fireplaces but I had no proof that the sealant was applied.  When I asked Rob “well how do I know that you applied the sealant?” he got flustered, stammered a little and said there was no way to tell unless you watch them apply it.  He gave me instructions not to use the fireplace for the next 24 hours.  I felt bad for putting him on the spot and let it go at that.  I paid him.  Warning #5 – Rob told me that the appointment before him had over paid because Rob significantly over estimated the height of the chimney.  They were going to keep the money.

After he left I started thinking a bit more.   It seemed strange to me that a sealant was applied but I couldn’t smell it and that there would be no dripping or leaking.  I took a look up the chimney and saw that nothing had been applied to the interior of the chimney.  I am now concerned that they may not have attached the caps to the chimney.

I have left several messages for Rob asking him to either apply a sealant or to give me back half of my money.  I am sure you are not surprised to read that I have not heard back from him.

While this lesson hurt financially what really hurts is my pride.  I thought I was smarter than that.  In my frenzy to get everything done as quickly as possible I made the wrong decisions.  However, this is a good lesson too.  Although I am out several hundred dollars in the big scheme of things I got off cheap.  I now know that I am going to do my research not just on the companies that I am going to use but on the work that is going to be done.  I am going to get 3 estimates.  I am going to check the BBB.org website.  I am going to pay more to a reputable company to get guaranteed work.  I hope that reading this will prevent you from hiring The Chimney Sweepers http://mysafechimney.com/Home.html or anyone who prays on the trust and naiveté of others.  Ohhh, it burns me that he lied right to my face.  My guess is that in a few months his phone number, business name, and maybe even his name will change in order to avoid the bad reputation he is earning but he will keep on doing it.  As they say there is a sucker born every minute and this weekend I was defiantly the sucker.  Remember, if your gut is screaming take a step back, you may never know how much you saved.

  1. It's too bad you didn't post to BBB.org first because I called and made an appointment for a chimney cleaning after checking that site.
As I waited for them to arrive this morning for their 8:00 appointment, I became concerned and put their phone number into google and found your negative comments.
45 minutes have passed and I have chosen not to call them to find out where they are, nor will I open the door if they arrive.
Please post negative feedback on BBB.org for others to be warned!

  2. I have reported him to the BBB but it will take a while for them to actually post it.

  3. I had used this chimney company to clean out my chimney and fireplace. No mess and all went well. They did not ask or tell me to do any extra repairs (told me none were needed). I had that sealant done years ago by another chimney company and it was over $1000. I wish I only paid 3-4 hundo for it... lol Same thing, I looked inside and could not see or smell it, but it sure solved the problem.

Also to the other anonymous. They were 45 min late?
    Omg, call the cops...lol

I leave bad comments for problem companies too. But this place was good, on time, neat and honest to me. Anyways, thats my two cents...

  5. Seriously? The last 2 tools that posted are either Rob "Scumbag" Reimer himself or his douchbag puppet partner that climbs the ladders. These guys are scammers for sure. Get your face bashed in lately Rob?

  7. Amazon Local just had a chimney sweeping deal posted for this company this morning (here - http://local.amazon.com/chicago-northwest-suburbs/B006TZRYXG?src=email&cid=em_dd_600_101_na&ref_=pe_142220_22427970). I am so glad I found this posting before buying the deal (I was this close to doing so). Thank you so much!

  8. OMG, I wish I would have read this. I did the Amazon deal and he totally scammed me for this $35 a foot stuff. He had me made the check to him and cashed it immediately. He told me he ordered a new part for my chimney.

  9. This guy is a total scam artist. Steer clear. Does no work, collects your money. Don't know how he sleeps at night.

  10. I got the Amazon local deal, too. I didn't check into him, thinking Amazon wouldn't post deals from shady companies. He came and actually cleaned the chimney and earned his $69 worth. He told my husband and I that the flue needed to be sealed and the crown needed to be fixed and wanted to do it then. He had given us a quote that he could fix the crown for $49, and apply the sealant for $15/ft. He said we needed only 6 ft of sealant to be applied. We had him come back and do the repairs the other day. He was up on the roof for only 20 minutes and he was "done". I went out there and only ever saw a ladder come off his truck, no tools or anything else. He charged me $240 for the sealant because he said 16 ft needed to be applied, not 6. Just went ahead and did it, didn't even ask if that's what I wanted. DO NOT USE THIS CON ARTIST!!! My husband checked the inside of the chimney and the crown, no work was done.

  11. This guy was so completely rude. First didn't even answer the phone with the business name and was very brusk. Then he called me to confirm the appointment I told him I had to reschedule--he said then I won't get the special deal of $85.00. So I said ok. Meanwhile, I went to Yelp and saw every person complaining so I decided I wouldn't go through. When I tried to cancel the appointment he started harassing me. Then I told him I was actually cancelling because of the negative things I read. He promptly hung up on me. Don't use them!!!!!!!!

  12. I'm a little torn about my experience. I got a Groupon and also got a receipt from THE FIREPLACE & CHIMNEY GUY...(630) 882-0244. Now I did get the chimney cleaned out for $79, but then he told me I need tuckpointing in the fireplace, which was another $75. He offered to clean out my dryer vent tubing for another $75. He capped the vent out with a plastic "bird guard" for $30. There was also a travel charge of $20 for being 24.7 miles away from Schaumburg, however, that is still within the 25 miles of Schaumburg. So all in all, $279 total.

At any rate, I was a little concerned when they said they didn't take credit cards and only would take cash or personal checks written to Rob Reimer. (I'll be watching my account going forward.) Although services were render and he did leave footprints all the way through my house, my chimney is clean. He also offered to do some sealing on the roof, but I had to stop him there. The guy who did our service was named Aaron Thorton 312-206-8433. I'm just a little leery because of the 3 different phone numbers and websites that came up, however, at least he showed up...albeit at noon, when the window was between 10-12. Won't be contacting them again.

  13. These guys are scams! Beware! Luckily I figured it out quick enough to put stop payment on the check, but they still got us for $200.00. They did clean something out of our chimney and said they tuck pointed, but who knows. Now will have to have someone else come and look to make sure everything was done properly.

  14. I am a satisfied chimney services customer for a year. Trusting them for a chimney solution they provide for us. After all this time, our chimney works perfectly fine even now.

  15. Had my chimney swept today. All went well, lol. We used them 3 or 4 years ago and I really liked the guy. I do carpet cleanings for ******* ******* for over 10 years, so I know about complaints. Anyways, Rob and his helper Scott were on time, cleaned out the chimney, made no mess. Sealed up the top of chimney to stop water from dripping in. That's all I could ask for...... Complaints are a numbers game. Last year I had completed over 2200 jobs, over 200 compliments and slightly over 200 complaints and I had the highest score of the whole company. Your gonna get complaints. Also when you see our or any ad for $99 carpet cleaning, that means basic cleaning. BEWARE OF THE $5 a room carpet cleaners, they use the very weak equipment, then some how some way that price turns into $100 a room for a rug doctor type of cleaning. ALWAYS REQUEST TRUCK MOUNTED CARPET CLEANING. Enjoy life and smile

    1. @Bob Cramer, Clearly you don't understand the impact this man has had on people. Every website you go to talking about his businesses have negative comments, like people losing lots of money and you reply with "lol". If thats your attitude in your customer's houses, no wonder you had so many complaints (10% is a lot).
One more business name he operates under is Easy Breathing Air Duct Cleaning. Check Yelp for The chimney sweeps in Schaumburg, and the fireplace and chimney guy in Wheaton. BBB has him as Easy Breathing as does ripoffreport.com and complaintsboard.com. Complaints is not a numbers game or a game at all, I work for a very reputable chimney company in Chicagoland and out of every 1000 appts we might get 4 or 5 complaints and negative reviews online. If you do business right, you don't have to play the numbers game. Rob recently ripped off another one of our chimney customers for over $1500. She wanted an animal removal because there were racoons in her chimney. We had an appt to come out and he showed up a day before us and said he was a sub contractor working with us, which is a lie, and proceeded to kill the animals with fire instead of properly removing them. Then he of course found over $1000 of more work her chimney "needed", it didn't. It's obvious Robert Riemer has more negative reviews than positive, probably around 100:1 The exact opposite of any decent company. Stay away from Robert Riemer 525 Samoset Ct. Schaumburg, IL 60193, works out of his house and only accepts cash or check made out to his name. What reputable business would do that?

  16. So I'm guessing I am one of this companies victims as well.
Found them on the internet and honestly I'm not quite sure how. I saw several different companies offering a $79 inspection which I thought was a good deal.. Had 2 guys come out. One was on the roof and the other in the house with the shop vac cleaning the chimney. They told me that the chimney looked great, but needed a sealant as there was moisture behind it. I told them to go ahead because it sounded legit to me.. When they were done they game me a total of $432. I was SHOCKED at that price.. Then I started to feel extremely uneasy about the whole thing. I made the check out to R.R. and they left.
I was planning on stopping payment on the check. By the time I called the bank the next morning it was too late as they had cashed the check already. We checked the roof and it looks like nothing at all was done..
I'm completed pissed at myself. I will always be sure to check out a company with the BBB before I ever have any work done again.

    1. I just wanted to add that today, at around 3:00pm I too was "serviced" by a company called either R.R Chimney Services OR R.R. Chimney company. I was also asked to make the check out to RR...... They told me that my liner was just about finished and offered a acid sealant that needed to be heated up within 24 hrs by fire. The invoice/checklist I was handed was pre checked, filled in and photocopied. One of the guys name was Jesse.

  17. I just saw these posts today, they came out yesterday. Did I meet different guys? Kevin and Rob came out. I didn't need a lining or anything like that (they said it was in good shape), but I knew I was missing the chimney top. They said if we wanted to save money we could buy one at Home Depot and put it on ourself (my husband). R.R. chimney was good for us.

  18. Evanston. Got a call 2 weeks ago saying "The Chimney Sweeps" will be in my area and are running an $89 special. Booked the day and they said they would call me the day before. The guy called and his answers were really e short, when I said I didnt really have time he said it will only take 30min... I hung up. Thought more abt it (i didnt check a website, didnt ask for references, had never heard of them etc), so I called and cancelled. When I said I need to cancel, he hung up. I think his name was Rob and he called me from 331-262-1335.

    6. These guys tried to sucker me into paying $300 for a $79 simple cleaning! They they didn't put my chimney cap back on right and it blew off into my neighbors driveway, just missing his car! Of course they refuse to return my calls to put the cap back on.

My first clue should have been when I noticed their "company" had no address !!!!

They also use the phone numbers 630-791-0255 and 630-415-5447. Avoid these scammers at all costs! Chances are they have been sued before and just change the phone numbers and company name and then it's business as usual!

    7. I am pretty sure I was scammed today. The website they are using is chimney123.com. Number on the site is 630-415-5447. The pre-filled in receipt has the number 630-791-0255. I was charged over $450 and wrote a check to RR. They said I needed tiles replaced but they were done in 5 minutes. I also had to leave the gas going for an hour to dry it but I don't smell any kind of sealant or glue and am pretty sure nothing was done. I am having a reputable company coming next week to check. If they did do the work they said, I will report back. Meanwhile, I stopped payment on the check- hopefully it was fast enough- ugh.

    8. I'm surprised to see they've used that web address since October, since they seem to have to dodge their scammed customers constantly! They answer their phone as "Chimney Services".
Here's my story. We called them to get a chimney swept. The guy arrived with a shop vac and a brush and proceeded to the chimney to start cleaning. After about 5 minutes, I realized that there was soot landing on the kitchen counter, and when I brushed my hand across it, it smeared and was a mess. At that point I could see that it was actually floating in the AIR!! We had just spent HOURS cleaning this condo in preparation to sell it, and it was covered with soot! I was also painting in the kitchen, so there was WET PAINT for the soot to cling to! The living room, where the fireplace is, was all freshly painted the day before. The guy doing the chimney (I can only assume this was "R.R." (Rob Reimer), but he actually didn't tell us his name when he came in) acted so surprised it was happening, said he was going too fast so he would slow down and it would be okay. When he got done, my husband pointed out all the soot and told him the whole place needed to be professionally cleaned!

He went outside and came back in, stating that the problem was that there was a hole in his hepa filter! Once again, my husband told him that the whole place would need to be cleaned by someone. This guy went back out, supposedly to get something to clean with. But he never came back!

The entire outfit is a scam. He had requested a check be mailed in advance, made out to R.R., and now I know why. He KNOWS you will be unhappy and not pay after he is done. My plan is to report him to the Schaumburg police for vandalism, because what he did was a damn CRIME!
